Preparing For The Kitchen Renovation

I found some great tips on how to physically prepare for a kitchen renovation in the following article.

Here are a couple more tips:

1) Hire a contractor that has a reputation for keeping jobs on schedule and is not operating with higher volume than he can manage well.

2) Renovate your kitchen in the summer when you can picnic and eat outside.

3) Mentally prepare and expect it to be a little “nutty”. The kitchen renovation is by far the most disruptive. Remember that the “nutty” is part of creating memories so make the best of it and get ready for an amazing end result.

Feature Builder – Kolbert Building

In the industry as with all industries it is fun to collaborate and watch other builders create successful businesses. I am fortunate to be connected to some great builders across North America and Dan Kolbert is no exception. Many of us have watched each others businesses evolve and grow. It is my pleasure to recommend Kolbert Building to anybody looking to hire in the Maine Area.

Here are some photos from one of his recent projects in Cape Eliz:

Glossary – Tread

What is a tread?
The tread is the horizontal part of the stair – the part you step on.

Deck Supports In Place

As with all things properly built – a good foundation and support is critical.

Progress is happening mostly underground on the deck project but this week coming up begins the woodworking and deck building. Here are some shots of the guys working to finalize supports.

They had a bit of side work come up when Barnabas noticed that the carriage house recently relocated had very little support. Support is now in place and concentrated efforts are on the deck.

Glossary – Riser

What is a riser?
A riser is the vertical part of the step. Think the part that raises the step up, the front of the step, that supports the part that you step on – which is the tread.

Glossary – Stringer

What is a stringer?
A stringer is a board running from one floor to another in which staircase treads and risers are jointed. The stringer on the outside is called the outer string. The string up against the house is called the wall string.

Custom Wood – Table, Benches & Bed

What does the builder do when he is not building? I have made this joke before in context to Barnabas and here I am again.

In Barnabas’s downtime while transitioning to Kelowna he has found his groove in custom woodworking/making furniture pieces for his family.

The table was made with no nails and no screws – just custom joinery and glue. He has made the call that it’s not perfect joinery as he is out of practice but I am pleased. He has finished the table with Bee Wax which makes it safe to use as a cutting surface and though will require frequent applications in the short term – the long term affect is stunning.

The bed is simple, sturdy, classy and cozy. He has done some amazing work that we will enjoy for a long time.

The bench – well you have heard the saying “the cobblers children have no shoes”? It is the same for the carpenters children – sometimes they have no “shoes” and sometimes they have partially finished “shoes”. Barnabas has booked his second Kelowna job building a wrap around deck and is prepping for that now. The bench will eventually be done. The other one in the gallery is old from years ago.

Barnabas is interested in your smaller jobs especially when they are custom wood related.
